NEW DELHI – A case of suicide was reported from Maigalganj Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Friday. According to police, an unemployed man took his own life by jumping in front of railway tracks. A suicide note has been recovered from the spot.
The deceased, identified as Bhanu Prakash Gupta, was a resident of Maigalganj. He used to work at a restaurant in Shahjahanpur but due to lockdown he was rendered jobless and remained confined to his house.
In his suicide note, Bhanu cited extreme financial strain as reason for taking the drastic step. He revealed his struggle to cope with the situation ever since he returned home after the lockdown. in the absence of a regular income, he was finding it hard to feed his four children and bear medical expenses of his ageing mother. Bhanu, along with his mother, was suffering from respiratory disorder.
“Wheat and rice are available at government quota (ration shop) but the grocery store owner has refused to give tea, milk, lentils, vegetables and other spices on credits,” he wrote in his suicide note.
Bhanu claimed that neither the government nor the administration of the state came to their rescue. “Life for us, was a like living hell. With the lockdown getting one extension after another, prospects of employment had becoming bleak. With no support forthcoming from the government or administration we had lost all hope of making both ends meet,” reads the note.
Shailendra Kumar Singh, District Magistrate of Lakhimpur Kheri, however, said after a preliminary inquiry, it was confirmed that Bhanu had a ration card. “He got his quota of food grain for this month and hence we don’t think his suicide has anything to do with shortage of ration. Investigation is on to ascertain the reasons behind his move,” said.
Meanwhile, former Rajya Sabha MP Jugal Kishore offered to bear the wedding expenses of two of Bhanu’s daughters.
Referring to the incident, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted in Hindi, “In an unfortunate incident, Bhanu Gupta of UP claimed his life by coming under a train. He had lost his job. He had to get himself and his mother treated. He got only ration from the government. But his letter states that other items too had to be bought. There are other needs too. This letter may not reach you like the letter that celebrates one year. But please read this.”
Tagging UP government, another Congress leader Jitin Prasad wrote on his twitter handle, “Bhanu Gupta’s tragic suicide is a reflection of the grave economic crisis facing many and the lack of opportunity and income that will leave millions under a severe monetary strain. I appeal to the @UPGovt to provide monetary relief to the family who have lost their only breadwinner.”
In the suicide note, the deceased rued that his family would not have money even for his last rites.
