NEW DELHI – In a resounding endorsement of progressive student politics, the Left Unity panel made a clean sweep in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections, decisively defeating the candidates backed by the Sangh Parivar.
The joint Left panel—comprising the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF)—clinched all four central posts, reaffirming the campus’s historic commitment to democratic, secular, and inclusive values.

Significantly, SFI’s K Gopika Babu won the post of Vice President by a margin of nearly 1,500 votes, a result hailed by the organisation as a “major political achievement for the Left progressive movement” within the university.
Calling the mandate “a clear and conscious rejection of right-wing authoritarianism,” the SFI Central Executive Committee congratulated the student community for “decisively rejecting the communal and divisive politics of the Sangh Parivar.”
“This election outcome is not merely a numerical victory but a political statement against the politics of hatred, communal polarisation, and saffronisation,” the SFI said in a statement. It added that JNU students had once again asserted the campus’s stature as a beacon of critical thought and resistance.
The Left’s sweep in both central panel and school councillor seats underscores what the SFI called the “enduring strength of collective, issue-based politics” in contrast to the “divisive agenda of the right wing.”
The victory comes at a time when student politics across the country remains deeply polarised, and JNU—a symbol of dissent and debate—continues to be a key site of ideological contestation.
