NEW DELHI — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Saturday said his government was planning to enact a new law to check incidents of ‘love jihad’.
Adityanath referred to the Allahabad High Court’s recent remark that conversion “for the purpose of marriage” between couples from different faiths was unacceptable.

‘Love jihad’ is an Islamophobic theory peddled by Hindutva supporters which says Muslim men feign love and marry Hindu women to convert them to Islam.
“I warn those who conceal identity and play with our sisters’ respect. If you don’t mend your ways, your ‘Ram naam satya’ (chant associated with Hindu funerals) journey will beginm” said Adityanath, according to a report in Indian Express.
“The posters of those involved in ‘love jihad’ will be put on all road crossings,” he said, adding that his government would take steps to “protect honour and dignity of women.”
In February, the Central government said the term ‘love jihad’ was not defined under the law, and that no Central agency had reported any case. Further, the Indian constitution gives everyone a right to practise and propagate religion of one’s choice.
In August, Adityanath had asked senior officials to work towards a strategy for curbing incidents of “love jihad”.
