Congress president questioned Prime Minister Modi’s silence over the Iran-Israel war saying ran has been consistently supporting our country
NEW DELHI — Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to misappropriate the sacrifices and achievements of the defence forces for electoral gain. He said that Modi’s sole concern was winning elections.
Addressing a public meeting in Raichur in Karnataka on Monday, the Congress president noted that after the Pahalgam terror attack and during Operation Sindoor, the entire country was united and stood strongly with our defence forces. He said the BJP tried to claim credit for this, appropriating the soldiers’ actions as their own, media reports said on Tuesday.
Kharge said, while during the time of war, we were all united in national interest, but Modi was only concerned with how his party could benefit from the situation.
“If the BJP had fought like a captain, colonel, lieutenant, or general, we would have commended them”, he said, adding, “the credit is being claimed by those who played no such role”.
Later in Kalaburagi, Kharge spoke on the aggression of Israel and US on Iran and questioned Prime Minister Modi’s silence over the Iran-Israel war.
“Iran has been consistently supporting our country. We procure nearly 50% crude oil from Iran. Currently, the war is happening in Iran. But PM Modi is not speaking anything about this war and still calls himself a Vishwaguru”, he noted.
Calling for the war to end, he said, “we wish the war between Israel and Iran stops.” He said, Smt. Sonia Gandhi, in an article published recently, exhorted that India should speak up and there should be peace in the world.
Emphasising India’s longstanding ties with Iran, Kharge noted that the country has consistently supported India in difficult times, including at international forums such as the United Nations on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to reporters Kharge said, “We want peace in the world. Iran is our neighbour and always stands with us in tough times. We have trade relations with Iran, and we import crude oil from them. When the question of J&K was raised in the UN, Iran took our side. We want Iran not to suffer. Any country that wants to be at peace shouldn’t be interfered with… We don’t want any country to attack any sovereign, democratic country… Be it Israel, Iran, or the US, they shouldn’t attack any sovereign, independent country. It’s happening there today; it will happen somewhere else tomorrow. India has always been with those who want to be at peace.”
Earlier in the day, Congress MP Imran Masood emphasised that India must support Iran amidst its conflict with Israel, as it is one of India’s old friends.
He mentioned that India has “cultural” and “trade” relations with Iran, and the country should stand with them as it has stood with India in every possible manner.
“We should stand with Iran. Iran is an old friend of ours. We have trade relations and cultural ties with them…So, we should stand with Iran firmly. Iran has always supported us in every way. So, we should be seen standing with Iran in these difficult times”, Imran Masood said.
