Kerala Muslims Celebrate Eid in Style, with Uniform Civil Code Under Attack

Date:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Muslims across Kerala celebrated Eid on Thursday with religious fervour and traditional gaiety but not without condemning the Centre’s statements on Uniform Civil Code.

Right from early morning, the people in their traditional attire could be seen hurrying to the mosques and Eidgahs which had separate enclosures for women.

The famed Palayam Mosque located a stone’s throw from the State Secretariat here was crowded with the Imam Dr V.P. Suhaib Moulavi demanding that the Centre dump the UCC as it infringes and violates the Constitution.

“There should be no attempt to take away the religious rights of the people. The Centre should desist from this,” said the Moulavi.

Incidentally, the Muslim population in Kerala accounts for 26 per cent of the 3.30 crore state population. — IANS

Mufti Mukarram on UCC

In the national capital, Dr Maulana Mufti Muhammad Mukarram Naqshbandi, Shahi Imam of the historic Fatehpuri Masjid, also condemned the govt’s uncalled for effort to impose Uniform Civil Code. Delivering his Eid sermon, Mufti Mukarram spoke on the incivility of the Uniform Civil Code.

“Laws are made in Parliament and there are state assemblies. They all are allowed to formulate their own laws applicable in their respective states. Where is the uniformity?” asked Mufti Mukarram. Diversity is the main attraction of our country, it should be preserved, he said.

“Followers of different religions live in harmony in our country. The implementation of UCC will be a direct blow to their religious identities”, he said. — Clarion India reports from Delhi
