Kashmiri Shawl Seller Attacked, Looted in Punjab’s Kapurthala

NEW DELHI — A young Kashmiri shawl trader, who visits Punjab annually during winters, was assaulted by unidentified persons in the Sultanpur area of Kapurthala district of Punjab at the weekend.

The incident occurred in the Shahpur Andreta village on Saturday (January 18) when Mohammed Shafi Khwaja was on his way to sell shawls, media reports quoted police sources as saying on Sunday.

One of the attackers has since been arrested.

According to reports, three motorcycle-borne men attacked Shafi Khwaja from behind. The victim sustained several injuries in the attack and was moved to the Sultanpur Lodhi Hospital.

The attackers also took away Rs 12,000 in cash and his merchandise worth Rs 35,000, police said.

Soon after the incident, the Punjab police swung into action and arrested an accused, Raj Karan. The motorcycle used in the crime has also been seized, the police said.

Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused, police said.
