Karnataka Launches Special Action Force to Tackle Communal Violence

Date:

The 248-member unit has been set up to prevent mob attacks, hate speech, and revenge killings in sensitive districts like Mangaluru, Udupi and Shivamogga

BENGALURU – The Karnataka government has launched a Special Action Force (SAF) to stop communal incidents such as mob violence, hate speech, and revenge killings. The new unit was formally inaugurated on Friday in Mangaluru by State Home Minister G Parameshwara.

The SAF will keep watch in districts where communal tension is high, especially Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga. These areas have seen several violent incidents in the past, including stabbings and lynchings.

Speaking at the event held at the District Police Parade Ground in Mangaluru, Parameshwara said, “Many may criticise the formation of this force, but peace in Mangaluru means peace in the whole state. We will act firmly against anyone trying to disturb harmony.”

He added that the state government is serious about controlling communal violence. “If needed, we will extend this force to other parts of the state, too,” he said.

The SAF will have 248 well-trained officers, including a senior deputy inspector general of police, deputy superintendents, inspectors and constables. These officers have been chosen from the Anti-Naxal Force, showing the seriousness of the Congress-led government in tackling communal threats.

A senior official said, “The SAF will work around the clock to stop any attempts to create tension. They will act fast and take strong steps against those spreading hatred.”

This move comes after several incidents of mob attacks and revenge killings that had disturbed peace, especially in the coastal region. These crimes happened during the BJP rule and continued even after the Congress came to power.

The state government said in a press note, “The SAF will prevent incidents that threaten social harmony. It will monitor and respond quickly to any communal issue.”

At the event, the home minister and other senior officials also released the official logo of the Special Action Force. The logo symbolises the unit’s mission to maintain law and order and promote peace.

Many senior police officers and local leaders were present at the ceremony.

Home Minister Parameshwara urged citizens to support the SAF. “This force is not against any community. It is here to protect everyone and ensure that communal harmony is not disturbed,” he said.

The SAF will start work immediately in the identified sensitive districts. The government has said that it will closely monitor the results of this special unit and take further steps if required.
