NEW DELHI — Haryana’s BJP government is being pressurized to sack Additional Advocate General Naveen Kaushik. Kaushik has been judicially snubbed for helping the accused in Junaid Khan’s murder case. Taking the protest further, on Wednesday, scores of social activists were seen demonstrating outside Haryana Bhawan, seeking Kaushik’s removal. Junaid, a 16-year-old Haryana native, was stabbed to death by a group of fellow passengers on a running train in Haryana, in July this year.
Junaid was returning to his village in Haryana after shopping for Eid in New Delhi. His brutal murder shook the nation. However, his case has been pending since then in a Haryana district court. The family seeking justice, was in for a rude shock, when the news of the public prosecutor helping the accused was out in the open. As per a report in The Indian Express, YS Rathore, Additional District and Sessions Judge who is hearing the case said, in an interim order on October 25, that public prosecutor Kaushik was assisting the counsel of the accused.
Outside Haryana Bhawan, the protestors were seen shouting slogans against the Haryana government and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, along with their demand for the removal of the law officer.
Protesters Demand Transfer of Case from Haryana
Talking to Caravan Daily at the site of the protest, Mohit K. Pandey, former president of JNU Students’ Union, sadly stated that one shouldn’t expect Junaid to get justice in Haryana.
“It was the public prosecutor’s duty to ensure that the killers of Junaid get punished, but he himself is involved in protecting the killers. We have long held that BJP does not want to punish the culprits. Also, we need to understand that the prosecutor is associated with BJP and RSS. He often represented the saffron party on TV debates. This was bound to happen. If this pattern continues, then how can we expect justice,” asked Mohit.
He then added, “Whether it is Junaid, Akhlaq or Pahlu Khan, the accused in all these cases have been let off. More than that, those accused are being given jobs by the government.” Akhlaq was lynched by a mob over beef rumors in September 2015 in the Dadri, Uttar Pradesh while Pahlu was lynched by Gau Rakshaks in April this year in Alwar district of Rajasthan. Earlier this month, some media reports stated that some of those accused in the Akhlaq’s lynching case had been given contractual jobs at a state-owned power company.
“We are demanding the immediate sacking of the public prosecutor. And we also want Junaid’s case to be transferred to a state where BJP is not in power. Only then can we get justice for him,” said he said. Nadim Khan, an eminent social activist leading the protest, also echoed the same. He said, “We want to send across a message to the government that the appointment of a public prosecutor with RSS ideology was a wrong decision. Hence he should be immediately suspended and legal action should be taken against him.”
