NEW DELHI —Judicial custody of Safoora Zargar has been extended till June 26. The Special Cell of Delhi Police has produced the pregnant Jamia Ph. D scholar before Patiala special court of Judge Dharmendra Rana at noon on Monday.
“The instant application has simply been filed by the investigating agency to fulfill loophole as a habeas corpus petition has been moved by the accused persons before the Hon’ble Delhi High Court and in order to cure the illegal extension of remand, the instant application has been mischievously moved by the investigating agency”, said court order.
More than 50 people lost their lives and hundreds of houses were gutted in largescale violence and arson that took place in the last week of February. The irony is that thought it was an anti-Muslim pogrom, the police arrested many Muslims in connection with it. Zargar is one of them. She has been booked under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
One of the Jamia Coordination Committee’s (JCC) members told Clarion India, on condition of anonymity, that while the police were seeking police remand, her lawyer pushed for her bail.
Zargar, a student of sociology, has been media coordinator of JCC which emerged as a platform for the anti-CAA movement after the police crackdown on Jamia on the night of December 15.
In an open letter to her, her sister Sameeya Zargar called Safoora a feisty, brave and kind-hearted person. She used to be in the frontline of the rallies and protests.
In the month of February, Safoora fainted as she was in the front row during a tussle with police personnel. She told Clarion India that she was squeezed between cops and paramilitary personnel.
“The bail petition for Safoora has been filed in the court today and it will be heard on 28 May 2020”, told one of the legal cell members of JCC, on the condition of anonymity.
