RANCHI – Two police officials allegedly beat up and abused two madrassa students in this capital city of Jharkhand. They also hurled epithets at the teenagers claiming that all madrasa students were terrorists.

The incident occurred as the two boys, aged 12 and 15, were on their way to recite the Qur’an at a home near their madrasa.

Talking to local media, a victim said he asked his friend to maintain silence as they were passing through a road with police presence. He addressed the policemen as “Mamu” (uncle). “Then, a officer came to us, abused and shouted at me. He called me out saying ‘you call me Mamu’. Then, he took us to the police station where I was beaten up,” the 12-year-old boy said.

The police beat up the elder student when he requested them to spare the kid.

“The police said these skullcap wearing people are terrorists and started abusing us. There was another Hindu man from the neighbourhood inciting the police to beat us more,” he said.

On Monday, a complaint was filed with the Kotwali Deputy Superintendent of Police Prakash Soy by a madrassa teacher Shamim Ahmed. In the complaint, Ahmed named ASIs Ajay Kumar and Anil Kumar as the culprits. He said he and former panachayat officebearer Inamul Haque were also abused when they intervened.

Talking to local media, the individual who had invited the students to recite the Qur’an at his residence, said when he was informed that the  boys were being beaten up at the police station, he went there to talk to the police. He alleged that he was also abused and heckled by police officials.

The incident has drawn a lot of reactions on social media. Some people have tagged Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren demanding action.

“When a policeman assaulted a Muslim child and said “All those who wear skullcaps are terrorists” what trauma this little child went through. And then they ask Muslims, why don’t you trust the Police and Laws. This is why,” said a social media user Laibah Firdous.
