NEW DELHI – A 30-year-old Muslim man was beaten to death by a mob over the allegation of goat theft during the intervening night of Sunday-Saturday in the Tatisilwai area of Jharkhand’s Ranchi.

The victim was identified as Akhtar Ansari from Kadam Kulli village of Jharkhand. Ansar is survived by four young children and wife.

While speaking to reporters, Sarfaraz, nephew of Ansari, said that at 8 pm, Ansari told him that he was going to attend a marriage function. Then at 2 am, Sarfaraz received a call from an unknown person and heard that a mob was shouting to beat him up.

“This is an incident of mob lynching. There is no issue related to the theft. When I went to the police station, my uncle was accused of theft. This is completely false. There is nothing like theft. No suspicious thing was found with him,” said Sarfraz.

The number that he got the call from was showing as ‘Black Panther’, “the man on call was threatening to kill Ansari. Then, the family members contacted the local police station. The local police traced the location of the number, finding it under the jurisdiction of Tatisilwa police station. The nearby police station was informed about the incident.

At morning 7 am, Sarfraz got a call from Tatisilwa police station informing that a body was found. The police shared the photo of the body on Sarfaraz’s WhatsApp. It was the body of Akhtar.

“We want justice. We want the violence to be stopped. We are witnessing such incidents on a daily basis and sadly its being normalised,” he said.

Mohammed Shakir, state president of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, slammed the state government for failing to stop the lynching.

“Sadly another mob lynching! Akhtar Ansari, a resident of Katamkulli in Ranchi, was brutally beaten to death with sticks by a mob on the false charges of stealing a goat. Despite having a so-called secular government in the state, not a single month goes by when there are no lynchings of Muslims,” he said.

Earlier, an imam of a mosque Maulana Shahabuddin was allegedly beaten to death in Jharkhand’s Koderma district this week when his bike slightly hit a woman causing minor injuries. The incident has caused a massive uproar among the members of Muslim community in Jharkhand. They had demanded strict action against the culprits while calling on the state government to put a stop to these incidents.
