The Congress leader says BJP is trying to silence him through fear and intimidation; Police confirm call came from Uttar Pradesh, investigations are ongoing
RANCHI – Jharkhand Health Minister and senior Congress leader Dr Irfan Ansari, known for his outspoken style and sharp political statements, has claimed that he received a threat call late on Sunday night, leaving his supporters alarmed. Police said the call originated from Uttar Pradesh and have stepped up the minister’s security while an investigation is underway.
According to reports, the minister received the call at around 11 pm from an unknown number. The caller allegedly told him: “Bahut bada neta bante ho, main aa raha hoon, tumhe uda doonga” (You act like a big leader, I am coming, I will blow you up).
Shaken by the call, Dr Ansari immediately informed the police. His supporters also gathered at his residence expressing concern for his safety.
Speaking to reporters, the minister directly blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “The BJP has made my life miserable. They are trying to frighten me repeatedly so that I stop speaking the truth. But I will not be silenced,” he said.
Police officials confirmed that the matter is being investigated. A senior officer stated: “The call was made from Uttar Pradesh. A team has been assigned to trace the person involved. The minister’s security has been strengthened in the meantime.”
Dr Ansari recently courted controversy when a video of him speaking in Madhupur went viral on social media. In the clip, he is seen telling BJP leaders that he would “dig their graves.” BJP leaders accused him of using threatening language, while his supporters defended it as a figure of speech.
The Congress leader has now clarified that his words were twisted. “My statement was distorted and presented in the wrong way. I never meant it literally. Tell me, when even America’s President Donald Trump shows respect by touching the BJP’s feet, how could someone like me talk about burying them? We only want development and unity, not division,” he said while addressing a gathering in Bokaro.
Dr Ansari also criticised the BJP for diverting attention from real issues. “The BJP and its leaders should speak about development, about roads, health and education. Instead, they are busy spreading hate and trying to divide society. I will keep raising my voice for the people of Jharkhand,” he added.
The minister further alleged that BJP leaders have targeted him with communal remarks. “They say Irfan Ansari should be sent to Bangladesh. This is shameful. I am a son of Jharkhand, I am its identity. No one can erase me or my contribution. Instead of insulting Muslims by calling us outsiders, BJP should focus on people’s problems,” he asserted.
The incident has created tension in Jharkhand politics, with Congress leaders condemning the threat call and demanding quick action. Supporters of Dr Ansari believe that Muslim leaders are often targeted to weaken their political influence.
One supporter outside his residence said: “Dr Ansari always speaks for the poor and the minorities. That is why BJP leaders are scared of him. This threat is just another attempt to silence him, but our leader will not bow down.”
For now, the police investigation continues. The state government has assured that the minister will be given full protection.
