NEW DELHI – A protest demanding justice for the rape victim of Hathras was staged at the Jantar Mantar on Monday. It was second such protest at Jantar Mantar this month. On October 2, hundreds of citizens, student groups, activists and politicians gathered here to express solidarity with the Hathras gang rape victim.

The protestors who gathered on Monday denounced the government handling of the Hathras tragedy that has rocked the nation. The protest was organised by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). It was a culmination of the party’s three-day nation-wide sit-in programme of protests that have been staged in 100 cities, according to IUML leaders.

Along with Hathras victim, the protestors also remembered 2017 rape victim of Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. She, too, was murdered by the rapists but they have not been punished so far. Her mother, Mrs. Parvati Devi, arrived from Kurnool to join the protest. She is demanding a CBI inquiry which the government has continuously been ignoring.

A number of people delivered speeches including senior journalist Bhasha Singh who was the guest speaker. They demanded that the UP government as well as the centre stop the blame game and give justice to the Dalit family. The family has rightly demanded that investigation should be done under judiciary. The SIT or any other investigative agency should report to a bench of sitting judge of honourable Allahabad High Court, the speakers said.

The way a Dalit girl of Hathras was raped, tortured and left to die a painful death is just one part. The second and the most important is UP government’s mishandling of the case. Instead of giving justice and solace to the victim and her family, the entire government machinery has been geared up to save the culprits who belong to the upper caste.
