NEW DELHI – A PhD student of Jamia Millia Islamia ( JMI) was arrested on April 1 morning. Meeran Haider, who is also a member of Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), served a notice by the special cell of Delhi Police a day before his arrest.

Meeran was summoned at the Lodhi Colony office of the special cell on the pretext of interrogation and was later taken into custody. He has been charged with delivering hate speeches at several protest sites.

Haider is the leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and has been organising protest rallies against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

According to fellow students, around 10 men were seen at Abul Fazal Enclave, the locality where he lives, inquiring about him a day before he was served the notice. The police are not sharing any credible information with the family of Haider. His arrest sent panic among the other members of the JCC.

“The cops presented Haider before a judge at his residence in Saket and got his custody for further inquiry,” said one of the JCC members. The next hearing is scheduled on Sunday next.

Safoora Zargar, another member of the committee and scholar of JMI, told Clarion India that the state machinery was harassing and framing student activists in false cases to suppress voices of dissent. “This is nothing but a witch-hunt against Muslims,” she said.

One of the members of the anti-CAA movement said on condition of anonymity, “We feel intimidated as there are a a number of FIRs filed by the police in the name of unknown perpetrators.”

At the beginning of the year, Chandan Kumar was served a notice for investigation. Later, his mobile phone was confiscated. The case is still pending at the Saket Apex Court.
