JAIPUR — Tensions have escalated in Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal area following an alleged attack on Muslim worshippers at the Imambara by BJP MLA Bal Mukund Acharya and his associates.
On October 23, Acharya, along with several other individuals reportedly aligned with Hindutva ideology, entered the Imambara, where Muslim women were praying, and allegedly harassed them, demanding to see an idol they claimed was hidden within the premises.
Witnesses allege that Acharya and his group intruded on the women’s section, disregarding protocols of modesty and sanctity, and reportedly behaved aggressively. “They came in with their shoes on and demanded to see an idol,” one woman told Aaj Tak, questioning if such behavior would be tolerated in temples.
During the intrusion, young Muslim women inside the Imambara were reportedly alarmed by the MLA’s aggressive questioning about the recently restored Islamic decorations within the building. Witnesses claim the group made intimidating comments about the religious practices and attempted to damage the entrance door. A Muslim woman present shared, “They were banging on the door, and the girls were scared, trying to find safety.”
Local residents and community members report that this was not the first incident of this nature. Multiple entries into the women’s section by similar groups have been reported, with community members alleging frequent disturbances. They contend that these incidents are targeted attempts to harass and intimidate Muslim women, exploiting the lack of protection for their secluded prayer spaces.
On the other hand, Acharya and his supporters maintain that the Imambara occupies disputed land and allege illegal construction, citing unresolved issues between the Waqf Board and local authorities. However, the Waqf Board asserts that the property is legally theirs, and has a long-established place of worship adjacent to a historic temple.
The incident has drawn widespread criticism, with local religious leaders calling for stricter security measures and legal protections for religious spaces in Jaipur, especially those frequented by women and children.
