NEW DELHI – The World Bowls Tour (WBT) has barred Israeli athletes from competing in the upcoming January 10-16 World Indoor Bowls Championships in Britain’s Norfolk.

The decision follows heightened political tensions after protests disrupted the International Scottish Open in West Lothian near Edinburgh last month. In a statement, the WBT acknowledged the complexity of the situation, describing the move as “difficult” but necessary to ensure the championship’s “success and integrity.”

“The decision reflects our commitment to protecting the championships and ensuring they run smoothly for everyone involved,” the WBT’s statement read.

In recent years, international sporting events have increasingly seen athletes from Arab, Muslim, and even European nations refusing to compete against Israeli players. These acts of protest highlight opposition to Israel’s policies in the region, including its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and the expansion of settlements.

Since October 7, 2023, the situation in Gaza has escalated dramatically, with what many describe as a humanitarian catastrophe. Backed by the United States, Israel has launched operations that have resulted in over 45,000 Palestinian casualties, including a significant number of women and children. Additionally, over 11,000 individuals remain missing amid widespread destruction, famine, and the displacement of families, leading to one of the most severe humanitarian crises in recent history.

The WBT’s decision underscores how global political issues continue to influence international sports, reflecting broader debates about ethics, justice, and human rights on the world stage.

However, World Bowls, an international federation that governs the sport of bowls worldwide, justified its move by stating that the decision was made “in the best interests of the event’s success and integrity.”
