NEW DELHI – Bollywood actress and United Nation goodwill ambassador Priyanka Chopra, who recently supported women’s protest in Iran against Hijab, has come under fire for maintaining a diplomatic silence over the persecution of Muslims, Hijab ban and other human rights abuses in India.

Chopra courted controversy by writing a post on Instagram expressing solidarity with the women protesters being held in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini under the custody of Morality police over the hijab.

“The voices that speak after ages of forced silence will rightfully burst like a volcano! And they will not and MUST not be stemmed,” she wrote in a long Instagram post lauding the courage of Iranian women in standing up to the authorities.

However, her voice for other countries’ women and silence for the Muslim women struggling for their right to wear Hijab in Karnataka colleges and schools did not go well with many.

“Priyanka Chopra’s concern for Iranian women is hugely appreciated, but her silence on Bilkis Bano and the state-enabled persecution of Muslims, especially marginalised women in her home country, India is worth introspection,” said Rana Ayyub, internationally-acclaimed journalist while reacting to Chopra’s statements.

Rana also criticised other Indian celebrities who speak up on Iran protest, but remain silent on the persecution of Muslim in India.

“After Black lives matter, you know what is the latest fashion accessory for celeb voices in India ? Women in Iran. These ‘celebrities’ have stayed silent through state sanctioned violence against muslims especially women like Kauser Bi and Bilkis. Their activism is obscene PR,” she noted.

Reacting to the post, Rana asked Chopra as to whether she would like to speak up on the hate speeches made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Parvesh Verma against Muslims.

“Indian celebrities speaking about Iran will look the other way through this fascism and apartheid in their home country. This is a lawmaker in the Indian government asking for economic boycott of Muslims. Will the likes of @priyankachopra speak up for Muslims in India,” tweeted Rana.

US-based author Khaled Beydoun asked Chopra to comment on Muslim women who are being stopped from wearing Hijab in India.

Sweden-based professor Asho Swain asked why Bollywood celebrities remained silent when Muslim women were being denied from their right to wear Hijab.

Poet and activist Nabiya Khan called Chopra a “hypocrite”.

“@priyankachopra your activism of convenience is pukeworthy. This means nothing when you choose to look away from the plight of hijabi women in India who are denied education for wearing a piece of cloth over their head, harassed by hindutva goons and state. You are a Hypocrite!,” she tweeted.

Pointing out the issue of human right abuses in India, Khan called Chopra a “false feminist”.

“@priyankachopra never spoke up when police barged into universities. You were silent when women of shaheen bagh were spending their nights out in chilly winters protesting for their dignity.  You are a coward. You are no role model.  You are a false feminist. You should shut up,” tweeted Khan.
