India’s Political IPL — Badri Raina

BADRI RAINA | Caravan Daily

India’s mainstream politics

Is anything but funny;

It is a matter of livelihood,

And quantities of money.

Smaller a margin a party has

To form a government,

Greater value the market puts

On lawmakers with intent

To trade their allegiance

On the political IPL;

After all, in  politics rainy days

Come sooner than you can tell.

Party proprietors must therefore pay

For rooms in plush resorts,

Or risk sellouts to higher bids

From rival money pots.

Not principle but competition

Holds the richest bag of tricks

Not just in the corporate world

But in enlightened politics.

The people — they are always there,

To be told what is best

In the name of development,

Religion and caste.
