NEW DELHI — A distressed mother from Hyderabad has sought the help of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar for the safe return of her daughter from the United States. Recently, 36-year-old Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi was reportedly found living on the roadside due to depression.
In her letter to the minister, a distraught Syeda Wahaj Fatima wrote that her daughter was pursuing her master’s in Information Science from Trine University in Detroit City. She left for the US in August 2021 and was in regular touch with the family. But for the last two months, there has been no contact between her and the family.
“For the last two months, she was not in touch with me and recently through two Hyderabadi youths we came to know that my daughter was suffering from deep depression and her entire belongings have been stolen. As such she is on the verge of starvation and was spotted on Chicago streets,” said Fatima.
Fatima requested Minister Jaishankar to intervene in the matter and direct the Indian embassy in the US to locate her daughter and assist in her repatriation to India.
The matter came to light after a Hyderabad-based political activist Amjed Ullah Khan put out a video of Lulu Minhaj sitting at a roadside in Chicago. He also attached copies of the letter addressed to Jaishankar, her visa, and her passport.
“Syeda Lulu Minhaj Zaidi from Hyd went to pursue MS from TRINE University, Detroit was found in a very bad condition in Chicago, her mother appealed @DrSJaishankar to bring back her daughter,” he tweeted. He tagged Jaishankar, Pravasi Bharatiya Sahayta Kendriya, India’s US Embassy and IndiainChicago.
The video clip shows the extremely sorry condition of Lulu Minhaj. She looks very deserted and unhealthy. Covered in a blanket, the lean girl’s face lacks the usual luster and she talks incoherently.
Seeing her condition, her neighbour tweeted: “Omg I’m shocked to see her condition, they lived as our neighbours for many yrs. I know her from my childhood, she was an incredibly studious child. Please help her return to Hyderabad back to her family”.
Meanwhile, MEA Madad and India in Chicago have taken note of the matter and assured necessary steps in this regard.
“The case vide Grievance Id US6RPT109412323 has been registered on Madad Portal and forwarded to the concerned Mission/Post for necessary action,” said MEA Madad.
