NEW DELHI — The Hyderabad police have initiated legal action against several individuals, including businessman K.P. Vishal Goud, for an alleged assault on an Amazon delivery agent, Sheikh Rehan Fayaz (20), earlier this week.
Goud is a relative of K.P. Vivekananda, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA from Quthbullapur, a village in Hyderabad in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district of Telangana.
The accused are alleged to have attacked Fayaz on August 5 reportedly after asking his name and ascertaining his Muslim identity. The incident has raised concerns about communal harmony and safety in the region, The News Minute (TNM) reported on Friday.
According to reports, Fayaz was delivering a parcel to Jeedimetla. When he contacted the customer, Fayaz was directed to a different location via WhatsApp. At the new location, he was asked to apologise for his perceived tardiness. Subsequently, Fayaz was asked to display his Aadhar card, which seemingly triggered a brutal assault. The attackers used cricket bats and stumps in beating Fayaz and he was left with severe injuries including fractures to his hands and legs, the report said.
Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) spokesperson Amjadullah Khan alleged that the police initially declined to register a case on the day of the incident. He also said the victim was not immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. After seeking medical attention at a private hospital, Fayaz approached MBT, which assisted him in re-engaging with the police.
A case was eventually registered on August 10, according to Jeedimetla inspector M.Pavan. He refuted allegations that the police had neglected the initial complaint.
The accused have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and criminal intimidation.
At a press conference in Hyderabad, MBT’s Khan alleged that Vishal Goud has been accused in cases of assaulting people after confirming their identities.
