PATNA — West Bengal police have arrested a man, who was seen brandishing a weapon during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah, from Bihar’s Munger district. He was absconding since the incident.

The accused, Sumit Shah, a resident of Howrah had taken shelter at his friend’s house. He was involved in firing and brandishing the weapon in Shivpur locality in Howrah region.

Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi told The Indian Express, “Sumit Shaw, the son of Raj Kumar Shaw, has been arrested from Munger last night. He was part of the VHP rally in Shibpur”.

A seven-member team headed by an inspector rank officer raided Maksaspur village under Kasim Bazar police station in Munger district on Monday night.

After arresting the accused, the officials produced him in the district court Munger and took a transit remand. He is booked under relevant IPC sections of rioting in Howrah police station.

According to police, he confessed his participation in the procession with firearms during interrogation.

Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) said with Shaw’s arrest the lies of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Vishwa Hindu Parishad have been exposed. “Yesterday, the BJP and VHP claimed that the procession video does not belong to them,” said TMC spokesperson Krishanu Mitra, reports The Indian Express.

“The man who was seen with a weapon and about whom the BJP had been in denial mode has now been arrested. It is clear that the BJP is bringing hooligans from Munger to Bengal for creating a disturbance,” added party leader Kunal Ghosh.

Massive violence was seen in Howrah during Ram Navami last week. Besides West Bengal, violence also occurred in Bihar’s Sasaram and Biharsharif as well. — (With inputs from IANS)
