NEW DELHI — Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani said that how can the people who “sacrificed the most for the country’s independence” be anti-national.

“The freedom movement of India was started by the Ulama and the Muslims; and the first flag of rebellion against the British in India was raised by the Ulama,” he said while addressing a huge gathering on the occasion of Independence Day at Darul Uloom Deoband, Saharanpur.

The Principal of the Islamic seminary and President of Jamiat Ulama Hind Maulana Arshad Madani said that not only freedom but also the history of the country is incomplete without the mention of the ulama (Islamic scholars) of India.

He listed the enormous sacrifices made by the great ancestors for the freedom of the motherland and said it was these Islamic scholars who started the freedom movement along with other Muslims as they knew the consequences of slavery at a time when no one was aware of it.

“It is our scholars who rose in revolt against the British in India for the first time. It’s they who had the courage to take on the might of British for the independence of the country when other nations had not even thought of it,” he pointed out.

Maulana Madani sought to inform those who deliberately ignore the real history of the country that it was our ancestors who revolted against the oppressive British rulers. They had even established a government-in-exile in Kabul, and a Hindu King Mahendra Pratap Singh was made the president of this government because our forefathers were in favour of freeing this country from the clutches of slavery on the basis of unity and humanity regardless of religion.

Recounting the event leading to the freedom movement Maulana said, “They (the Islamic scholars) were well aware of the fact that this dream could not be fulfilled without bringing Hindus and Muslims together. Later, when Sheikhul Hind came out of jail in Malta, he emphasised that the country’s independence is a mission that cannot be accomplished by the efforts of Muslims alone. It is possible only if the freedom movement is made a Hindu-Muslim movement.”

The Sheikhul Hind, he recalled, had also said that if the Sikhs, a martial race also comes along, the path to freedom of the homeland would become even easier. The saying of the Sheikh, he said is preserved in books.

“Our forefathers marched forward on the path of Hindu-Muslim unity and freed the country from the slavery of the British. But unfortunately with the independence came the partition. This division of the country became a cause of destruction, not for any particular nation, but for all the Hindus and Muslims,” he lamented.

The Maulana said if there was no partition, and these three countries remained united, the situation would not have arisen today where China has the upper hand over us daring to encroach upon our territories while our government remained a mute spectator. No power in the world could dare look at us.

He further said that this is not a story, it is a history that these fighters for the freedom of the country did not discriminate between Hindus and Muslims, and brought everyone together on one platform on the basis of humanity and succeeded in their goal.

He expressed deep anguish that the community which first stood for the country is today being labelled the enemy of the country. He asked whose elders made the most sacrifices for the country’s freedom, and how can their children become traitors of the country today.

He said, “Only those who indulge in the politics of hate are distorting history. These are the very people who want to run the country, not on the basis of peace, unity, and humanity, but on the basis of hatred. poverty, chaos, unrest, unemployment. The politics they have adopted is going to lead the country to destruction.”

He asserted that “this country is ours. If something happens to the country, our heart aches the most, and the reason for this is that our elders have made the most sacrifices for this country. We say these things openly because this is the real history. Government officials are also sitting here. Let them listen and note each word, analyse and read what history is”.

Maulana Madani further said, “We belong to the family whose people had faced hardships for the freedom of the country, even went to jail. Those questioning our patriotism should tell us what their people did for the freedom of the country. What do you know about freedom? You only know how to spread hatred.”

He said patriotism is not about the distribution of Tricolours in lakhs and crores. It’s about what you have done for the country. “We have done a lot for freedom. So, we know what freedom is all about,” he said.

He sought to bring it to the public domain how the Darul Uloom Deoband was built for the freedom of the country. If any sectarian group points a finger at it today, he said he must be crazy, demented, and insane. He does not know about the voices raised for the freedom of the country from the walls of the Darul Uloom.

He concluded by asserting the right to mention “those heroes of ours who did not care about their lives in the quest for the freedom of their dear country. We have the right to mention them and recall how they swung into gallows for the freedom of the country with a smile on their faces.
