NEW DELHI – A Hindu woman, who has embraced Islam of her own free will, has moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection from government officials and media. She alleges that she and her immediate family members are facing threat to their lives.

According to Live Law, in her petition, she said that she and her family members are being targeted and malicious content is being published about her owing to her conversion to Islam.

Her petition is likely to be heard on Wednesday.

The woman, who is a working woman in Delhi, converted to Islam on May 27. She says she took the decision to change her religion of her own free will and without any threat or coercion from anyone. On June 23, when she was in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, she started getting telephone calls from media persons who sought an appointment with her. She declined all the requests. Despite that, some of them visited her house, took her photographs and made videos without her permission. They even threatened her.

She has said in her petition that several small-time newspapers and news portals in UP have published news reports about her conversion giving completely absurd and imaginary details.

She has also written a letter to the Police Commissioner of Delhi seeking protection and alleging that she is receiving phone calls and messages from different people. They are threatening to take her back to the Hindu fold.

In her plea to the high court, she has alleged that, on June 26, her father was taken away by the Uttar Pradesh Police for questioning. She says she has also been informed that UP Police would be coming to Delhi to take her back to Uttar Pradesh where she would be forced to file a false complaint/FIR.

She has submitted in her plea that she is an adult and she is protected by India’s constitution to choose her own faith and she cannot be targeted and harassed for her choice of religion.

She has prayed the court to direct the authorities to ensure that she is not taken away from the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court by force or coercion and or by way of any other illegal means by state agencies or any other person.

She also sought directions to ensure the protection of the life, liberty, safety and security of herself, her family members and friends. They should not be harassed and interrogated with regard to her conversion.

She has demanded the directions to the media channels (Including electronic, print and visual media) to not to publish any malicious content with regard to the petitioner and not to divulge her personal details and if already done the same may be removed with immediate effect.

She also sought directions to the agencies of Uttar Pradesh to not to harass her or any other person related to her.
