AHMEDABAD — The Gujarat Muslim Hit Rakshak Samiti has accused the state government of suppressing peaceful dissent after being repeatedly denied permission to hold protests against the Waqf Amendment Act.
On Monday, the Samiti announced a month-long statewide protest starting Tuesday, calling the Act discriminatory and a threat to Muslim Waqf properties. The group said the amendment violates constitutional rights and is an attempt to encroach on religious endowments.
Ahmedabad Jamaat-e-Islami Hind president Iqbal Mirza stated that the protest would begin with a silent human chain on Nehru Bridge, with men and women standing on opposite sides, holding placards, reported Vartha Bharati.
However, the group is still awaiting police clearance. Mirza noted that earlier protests planned in Himmatnagar and Dholka were denied permission as well.
He pointed out that while other states allow peaceful demonstrations, Gujarat’s restrictions may force them to seek legal recourse from the High Court.
