Social activist Umardaraz Chashmawala approaches the chief minister after demolition notices issued

AHMEDABAD — The state government needs to review the process of removing unauthorised religious structures, social activist Umardaraz Chashmawala has said. In a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupinder Patel, the activist expressed deep concern over notices being issued for the demolition of unauthorised religious structures in the state.
Chashmawala stressed the importance of maintaining law and order in the state while also respecting religious sentiments. Chashmawala highlighted that urban planning laws and religious pressures have been discussed with the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court, which have issued orders for the relocation or removal of places of worship.
“If the work is done according to the law, then no one’s sentiments will be hurt and there won’t be any public anger.” He emphasised that issuing such notices would create unnecessary controversy and hurt the religious sentiments of many citizens.
“We humbly wish to draw your attention to the fact that this issue is very sensitive and may hurt the religious sentiments of our esteemed citizens. Therefore, if things are done legally and legitimately, peace and order will be maintained in the country and the province. Such cases can be handled with compassion and consideration,” Chashmawala wrote.
He suggested that instead of resorting to demolition, the state government should consider further reconciliation by introducing a comprehensive policy to regularise unauthorised religious structures. “By adopting such a policy, the government can deal with the necessary difficulties without facing them. This approach will promote harmony and respect for religious beliefs while maintaining the overall urban landscape,” he added.
Chashmawala also highlighted the duty of the government to respect the religious sentiments of all citizens and ensure the protection of their rights. He called for a reconsideration of the demolition notices, urging the government to respect the religious sentiments of the citizens and work towards finding solutions to maintain law and order.
“This letter expresses the sincere hope that the government will do its duty to take care of the religious sentiments of the citizens and try to take necessary steps to implement it as soon as possible. They also request peace,” Chashmawala concluded.
