AHMEDABAD: The ruling BJP suffered huge defeat in the civic body elections in the state on Monday and fell far behind its current position in the 75 municipalities though it won majority of them. As per the latest update from the counting centres, the BJP has won 44 out of 75 municipalities. In the previous poll, it had won 59 seats.

However, BJP’s defeat did not convert into victory of Congress as the party could win only 13 seats. The 75 municipalities had gone to poll on Saturday.

While BJP has retained some municipalities the Congress has snatched many others from it.

Congress has scored a thumping win in Rajula municipality in Amreli district where the party has ousted BJP by winning 27 out of 28 seats. On the other hand, BJP has retained Gadhda and Dwarka municipalities and snatched Chalala municipality from Congress. The Congress has also wrested Salaya municipality.

Besides 75 municipalities, elections were also held for two district panchayats, 17 talukas and 1400 village panchayats.

In the Assembly polls held in December 2017, the BJP, which has been in power in state for around 20 years, was restricted to 99 in the 182-member House. Since 1995, BJP had always been winning more than 100 seats. The Congress had shown its best performance by winning 77 seats in the assembly last year.
