NEW DELHI — Raziuddin Nasir, an accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts case, was released from Gujarat’s Sabarmati jail on Thursday.
The release, after 16 years of incarceration, followed a Supreme Court’s order granting him bail in the blast conspiracy case.
Hailing from Saidabad, the youngest son of renowned cleric and former president of Wahdat-E-Islami, Maulana Naseeruddin, returned to Hyderabad city and joined his family members at his residence, reports reaching here said on Saturday.
Maulana Naseeruddin passed away in 2020.
Nasir and 27 other accused in the case were acquitted in February 2022. However, he remained in jail for another criminal case pertaining to an alleged jailbreak incident. A trial in this matter is still ongoing.
The crime branch of Ahmedabad police arrested Nasir in 2008, claiming he was one of the members of Indian Mujahideen (IM), a faction of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
On July 26, 2008, a series of 19 bomb blasts rocked the city of Ahmedabad and reportedly claimed 56 lives.
