NEW DELHI — The Election Commission has announced the dates for the crucial Gujarat Assembly polls on Thursday. Polling will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5, and the results will be declared on December 8, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has announced.

The results of Himachal Pradesh elections will also be declared on December 8, according to Election Commission.

The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.

After the Gujarat poll dates were announced, the Model Code of Conduct came into effect in the state.

Before announcing the schedule for elections in Gujarat, the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar expressed condolences for the victims of the Morbi bridge collapse.

In Gujarat, the BJP has been in power for 27 long years. The Congress, which gave a tough fight to the saffron party in 2017, is trying hard to return to power in the state. However, with AAP making its entry in the western state the fight has become tougher for the Congress this time.

The results of Himachal Pradesh elections will also be declared on December 8, according to Election Commission.
