NEW DELHI — Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, a prominent political figure of Assam and president of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), has accused the government of obstructing the return of Waqf properties to their rightful owners.

Around 9.7 lakh acres of government land in India are actually Waqf properties, Maulana Badruddin claimed and said all the usurped land should be returned to the respective Waqf Boards.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Jamiyat Ulama in Assam recently, Maulana Badruddin argued that the properties, originally belonging to their forefathers who donated them for community welfare, must be handed back to the Waqf.

He stressed that these lands have deep historical and religious significance and should remain under Waqf control, media reports reaching here quoted him as saying.

Criticising the BJP government, the AIUDF chief alleged that prominent landmarks, including Ambani’s house in Mumbai and even the Parliament building in New Delhi, sit on Waqf land and should be returned to their rightful owners.

He also expressed concerns over the functioning of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) tasked with addressing the issue, claiming that it is not working effectively.
