NEW DELHI – A video clip showing some Kashmiri workers having been beaten up by a mob of goons surfaced on the social media on Tuesday. The video is from Silchar, Cachar district of Assam.

The incident took place in the Srikona village near Silchar twon at the intervening night of May 4 and 5. A man, in the background of the visuals, can be heard narrating the incident breathlessly. He alleged that the attackers were the workers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Kashmiris are facing violence here and the government of Assam is sleeping,” rues the narrator. “Where is Assam police?”

The grainy video shot in the dark amidst commotion shows two men purportedly victims of the attack are hauled into a van surrounded by a crowd. The narrator says harassment of Kashmiris is a routine affair in Assam.

The incident came in the wake of a resurgent wave of Islamophobia sweeping in the length and breadth of the country. Everyday reports of hate crimes against Muslims come to the fore. This is the result of a sustained vilification campaign systematically carried out by a large section of the mainstream and social media against Tablighi Jamaat after their Nizamuddin Markaz emerged one of the Coronavirus clusters.

Earlier in April, a group of locals attacked some Kashmiri Muslim labourers in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. Three of the labourers were grievously injured in the attack while others received minor bruises.

Police officials of Sadar Police Station in Silchar, though confirmed the assault on the Kashmiris, downplayed the crime saying it was a “minor” incident.

“Yes, the incident has happened but it was not a big incident,” said Goswami, officer in Charge (OC) of Saddar police station. “The video that you are talking about is exaggerating the issue.”

The moment we received information a police party immediately rushed to the spot, Goswami claimed. The video also shows a cop standing amidst the crowd.

He claimed that the police detained one, Jitindas, in this connection.
The officer said, “He was drunk.”

The police claimed that they have rehabilitated around 30 Kashmiris at a safer location and are assured them “full protection.”
