LUCKNOW – Gazipur MP Afzal Ansari has taken a significant legal step by seeking an extension in the Allahabad High Court to contest the upcoming election. Ansari’s legal team has petitioned the court for five additional days to file objections regarding a plea seeking an extension of his sentence. Should Ansari receive this respite, the voting process for the Gazipur constituency may proceed uninterrupted.

Afzal Ansari, who stands as the Samajwadi Party candidate for the Gazipur Lok Sabha seat, faces a looming legal battle following a four-year sentence imposed by the MP/MLA court in connection with a gangster case. The ongoing hearing in the Allahabad High Court is pivotal for Ansari’s electoral prospects, with voting scheduled for June 1.

In addition to Ansari’s case, petitions from the Uttar Pradesh government and the family of former BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai are also under consideration. Ansari’s legal representatives have requested a delay in proceedings to ensure ample time for objections to be filed.

This legal manoeuvre underscores Ansari’s determination to contest the Gazipur seat. His legal team aims to secure a favourable decision after the election to safeguard his candidacy. With the high court set to commence summer vacation on June 1, Ansari’s lawyers anticipate a decision possibly in July, aligning with their strategic objectives.

In the ongoing proceedings before Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh of the Allahabad High Court, Ansari has appealed for the cancellation of his four-year sentence in the gangster case. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government and Krishnanand Rai’s family have sought an extension of Ansari’s sentence to 10 years.
