Former Kerala Minister and IUML Stalwart Ahammed Kutty Dies at 71

MALAPPURAM – Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State secretariat member and former minister for local administration K. Kutty Ahammed Kutty, 71, passed away at his house at Tanur on Sunday morning. The respected politician and social figure, Kutty retired from active politics after suffering serious injuries in a car accident at Chavara in February 2005.

Kutty’s political journey was marked by dedication and service. He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Tanur constituency in the 1992 by-election. His commitment to public service saw him re-elected from the Turrangadi constituency in 1996 and 2001. His leadership was further recognised when he was appointed as a minister in Oommen Chandy’s cabinet from 2004 to 2006, where he managed portfolios such as Panchayats, Municipalities and Corporations, Town Planning, and Regional Development Authorities.

The veteran leader was also deeply involved in grassroots governance, serving as the state Vice President of the IUML, President of the IML Trade Union ‘STU’ Malappuram District, and President of the Tanur Gram Panchayat. A commitment to the development and empowerment of local communities marked his career.

Kutty’s contributions to Kerala’s political landscape were abruptly curtailed after the 2005 car accident which led him to retire from active politics. Despite this, his influence and legacy resonated within the IUML and beyond.

Kerala’s political leaders expressed their deep sorrow and condolences over his death. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, and IUML State General Secretary PK Kunhalikutty were among those who paid tributes to Kutty Ahammed Kutty’s enduring legacy.

The former minister is survived by his widow, Jahan Ara, and three children, Suhana, Suhas Ahmed, and Sahabas Ahmed.

The passing away of Kutty marks the end of an era for the IUML and the wider political community in Kerala. His life was a testament to the power of leadership, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to serving the people of Kerala. As the state mourns the loss of this stalwart, his contributions to Kerala’s development and the empowerment of its people will continue to inspire future generations.
