BENGALURU – A controversial incident unfolded in Karnataka’s capital city of Bengaluru as a woman in burqa was seen sitting indecently with her Hindu boyfriend in a park. The situation escalated when a group of Muslim youths passing by objected to the public display, starting a heated argument.
The video footage, which has since gone viral, shows the Hindu boy in an orange T-shirt and the girl in her traditional burqa, sitting together in an uncomfortable and intimate position in a public space. The Muslim youths, visibly upset by the display, questioned the couple, asking the girl if her family knew about her actions and why she was behaving in such a manner with a boy from a different religion. One of the youths even questioned the Hindu boy, asking why he was publicly engaging with a Muslim girl in what appeared to be an inappropriate way.
The confrontation quickly escalated. As the situation grew tense, the burqa-clad woman filed a police complaint against the five Muslim youths involved, accusing them of harassing the couple. Following the complaint, a case was registered, and investigations were launched. In a twist, another video surfaced showing the youths surrounding the Hindu boy, with one even allegedly physically assaulting him.
Karnataka police acted quickly, arresting five Muslim youths, including one minor, in connection with the incident. The arrests were made based on the woman’s complaint. Police initially claimed that the situation had not been violent, despite the new footage suggesting otherwise.
In response to the incident, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge spoke out strongly against the actions of the Muslim youths and the broader issue of moral policing in the state. He declared, “Moral policing will not be tolerated in the state at all. This is not Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, or Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka is a progressive state.”
The case has started intense debate across the region, with many questioning the actions of both the youths and the couple. While some have defended the youths, claiming that their objection was rooted in concerns about public decency and cultural values, others argue that the actions of the youths were an example of religious intolerance and unnecessary interference in the personal lives of others.
Muslim organisations and community leaders have condemned the incident, stressing the importance of respect for individual freedoms and opposing the use of public spaces as arenas for imposing religious or cultural norms. “This was a clear case of moral policing,” said a local community leader. “It is important to respect others’ choices, especially when it comes to personal relationships.”
