RANCHI –– Muslims across Jharkhand are in a state of shock as a FIR was lodged against 16 prominent Muslim activists for organising a meeting to discuss Muslim representation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The FIR has accused them of making an attempt to disrupt communal harmony. But activists have claimed that they had assembled with a single agenda if putting forward a demand before politicians that Muslims should also be granted tickets to contest elections from Muslim-dominated constituencies.

The FIR complaint was lodged by some Vijay Kumar Uraon at Hind Pidi police station on March 17 and have charged the organisers of disturbing communal harmony, offending the sentiment of a particular community and violating the model code of conduct. The complaint was filed on the basis of a report published in a local Hindi newspaper (Azad Sipahi) which highlighted the meeting organised by a group of social activists.

The report is titled ‘If Muslims are not allowed to contest elections from three seats (Muslim concentrated constituencies), they will contest elections under the third front’. During the meeting organised on March 15, social activists accused the Mahagathbandhan (Grand alliance) of discriminating against Muslims in allotting tickets for elections.

Azad Sipahi’s chief editor Hari Narayan Singh told local media that he did not publish any such thing about the meeting which the FIR accuses the activists of.

“There was no communal talk during our meeting. It was neither earlier, nor during that meeting nor will it be in the future. This has never been our intention,” said Nadeem Khan, who was present at the meeting. Khan is also one of 16 activists who has been named in the FIR.

Bashir Ahmed, Dr SS Ahmad, Ajaz Ahmad, Nadeem Khan, Haji Imran, Raza Ansari, Lateef, Md Naushad, Abdul Ghaffar, Hafeez, Junaid, Nawab Chisti, Sonu Bhai, Imam Ahmad, and Mohammad Shahid are the other fifteen people who have been named in the FIR.

According to Khan, this is the first time in Ranchi that such a large number of people have been booked in a case. Those who were booked are well-known faces and have a fight for people’s democratic rights and communal harmony. Some of them also fought for Jharkhand’s separation from Bihar.

He alleged that this is a planned conspiracy to intimidate Muslims, to keep them away from mainstream politics and to also keep them as the second class citizen. He maintained that Muslims are still considered as a vote bank for the political parties.

“We have been visiting marginalized and Muslim areas for the last three months to hold discussions concerning our democratic rights. The meetings are being held under no banner. The issue we were discussing is that in Muslim concentrated areas, there is a lack of schools and universities, hospitals and job providing centers. We have been talking about agenda based votes,” said Khan while talking to Clarion India.

Echoing Khan’s point was social activist Dr SS Ahmad, who has also been named in the FIR, said, “We had organized the meeting with the intention of spreading awareness among the Muslim community to not just become a vote bank but to ask for electoral representation. We also wanted the community to become aware of its needs and to demand for schools, colleges, hospitals and good infrastructure from the candidates seeking our votes”.

Objecting the case against the activists, CPI(ML) leader Vinod Singh said that such meetings are not a violation of model code of conduct as such meeting was about discussing political representation. “Election Commission should take note of this case, as there has been no violation of model code of conduct or attempt for creating communal disharmony. It is the right of every community to seek representation from political parties. In fact these days, many political parties openly take religious minority groups name during rallies to polarize votes, but very rarely any action is taken against them,” said Singh.

  1. OBVIOUSLY IF RSS (HINDUTVA TERRORIST) GIVEN THE ARMS TRAINING AND CLAIMS THAT THEY WILL FIGHT WITH THE NEIGHBORING COUNTRY BY REMOVING INDIAN ARMY BUT NO ACTION WILL BE TAKEN ON THEM, BUT IF MUSLIMS WILL DO ANY LEGAL ACT ACCORDING TO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT THEN THEY WILL BE CHARGED WITH FAKE BASIS OF DISTURBING HARMONY…saffron terrorists must be bring down in this upcoming election, otherwise there will be a big thread to our country’s peace and harmony, already the whole world witnessed the communal terrorist acts done by hindutva terrorists in last 5 years…
