FIR was registered against farmer Baljindra’s mother Jasvir Kaur, brother Gurvinder and an unidentified person
NEW DELHI — The Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police on Friday booked the mother and brother of a farmer who was killed in a road accident, after a video went viral showing him draped in the national flag.
Draping a civilian in the national Tricolour is an offence as per the flag code of India.
Baljindra, a farmer from Bari Bujhia village in Pilibhit district, died near the Ghazipur protest site on the Delhi-UP border in an accident on January 25 where he had gone to participate in the 73-day-old agitation, the police said.
Superintendent of Police Jai Prakash Yadav said his family members came to know about the incident on February 2 and they brought the body to their village.
“The family covered the body with the national flag like that of a martyr and took it for last rites on Thursday. The video of the last rites went viral on social media after which an FIR was registered against Baljindra’s mother Jasvir Kaur, brother Gurvinder and an unidentified person,” the SP was quoted in a report by PTI.
Thousands of farmer protesters have been camping on the outskirts of Delhi since late November against the pro-corporate agrarian reforms enacted by the Central government.
