The new party would contest 135 seats in West Bengal elections aiming to be a ‘major game-changer’ in the electoral landscape
MURSHIDABAD — A day after laying the foundation stone of ‘Babri-style’ mosque in Beldanga here, the expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislator, Humayun Kabir, announced his plan to launch a new political party.
In an interview with NDTV on Sunday, he said that he would launch the party on December 22 and form an alliance with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
The Beldanga event, attended by several Islamic scholars and hundreds of thousands of people, coincided with the anniversary of the dastardly destruction of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.
Kabir claimed that around 800,000 people attended the ceremony. According to him, despite the absence of support from the local police, lakhs of people participated in the event.
Speaking about the reconstruction of the Babri Masjid, Kabir stated, “Industries across the country will support me. Muslims in India have significant resources, and they will contribute to building the Babri Masjid.”
During the interview, Kabir also criticised both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress. He asserted that he would not allow the BJP to come to power in West Bengal and claimed that the Trinamool Congress would not be able to form the next government in the state.
Announcing his new political outfit, Kabir said it would work primarily for the welfare of Muslims. Regarding the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, he declared that his party would field 135 candidates, positioning himself as a “major game-changer” in the electoral landscape.
Kabir added that he is in touch with AIMIM and plans to contest the elections in alliance with them. He also confirmed that he has spoken directly with Asaduddin Owaisi.
Meanwhile, AIMIM spokesman Syed Asim Waqar ruled out an alliance with suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir.
“As far our knowledge goes, Kabir is a member of the core team of Bengal’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari and the entire nation knows that Adhikari is a member of the core team of Union home minister Amit Shah,” Waquar told Hindustan Times.
“Muslims of this country don’t have a destructive mindset. They are with people who build the nation. Owaisi Saab never helps those who want to destroy peace and communal harmony. The Muslims of Bengal know very well under whose instructions Kabir is working,” HT quoted AIMIM spokesperson as saying.
Kabir, however, said, “Owaisi, too, is called the BJP’s agent. These are part of politics. If Owaisi wants to contest polls in Bengal then he needs me. I don’t need him.”
Kabir’s political career has been marked by significant shifts. He started with the BJP, then moved to Trinamool Congress, got suspended, and is now launching his own front, aligning with AIMIM. This highlights his growing ambitions and the changing West Bengal politics.
