‘Ever-Inspiring’: PM, Rahul, Other Leaders Remember Maulana Azad

Political leaders across the political spectrum paid glowing tributes to the prominent freedom fighter and the first education minister of Independent India on his birth anniversary, and hailed his contribution to the freedom struggle and the education system.

NEW DELHI – On his birth anniversary on Friday, political leaders across the political spectrum remembered prominent freedom fighter and the first education minister of Independent India Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and hailed his contribution to the freedom struggle and the education system as inspiring.

Born on 11 November 1988, Azad, who was honoured with India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna, was the first education minister from 1947 to 1958. During his tenure, he played a key role in the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the School of Architecture and Planning. He was also responsible for setting-up University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE), Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Sahitya Academy, Lalit Kala Academy, Sangeet Natak Academy, and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Paying glowing tribute to the leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “He is widely admired for his scholarly nature and intellectual prowess. He remained at the forefront of our freedom movement, working closely with other leading lights. He was also passionate about education”.

Remembering Maulana Azad, prominent Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called him a “great freedom fighter” and an “inspiration”.

“Remembering the great freedom fighter, scholar and India’s first Education Minister, Bharat Ratna, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, on his birth anniversary today. His vision for building India’s education system gave us many world-class institutions. He remains our inspiration,” said Gandhi.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid floral tributes to him along with other political leaders and described him as “ever-inspiring”.

Kharge also shared his quotes on Indian nationality.

“I am part of the indivisible unity that is Indian nationality. I am indispensable to this noble edifice and without me this splendid structure is incomplete”— Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

“The contribution of Maulana Azad in nation building is ever inspiring,” he tweeted.

Azad’s birth anniversary is also celebrated as the National Education Day. On this occasion, many people also talked about the importance of education.

Remembering him, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) national spokesperson Nawab Malik said, “He will always be remembered for his enduring contribution in the field of education”.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also paid his tributes to Maulana Azad.
