ISTANBUL — Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won the country’s key presidential vote, electoral officials have said, in a result that will allow him to keep his seat with increased powers and become Turkey’s first executive president.

Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) announced on Monday President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won an absolute majority in the presidential election, according to news reports.

Turkish citizens voted in the parliamentary and presidential elections on Sunday.

Currently, 99.2 per cent of the boxes have been opened as Erdogan is leading with 52.5 percent of the votes while his major rival Muharrem Ince lags behind at 30.6 per cent.

Along with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Justice and Development (AK) Party’s election ally, the People’s Alliance has won 53.6 per cent of the votes as 99.1 per cent of the boxes have been opened so far in parliamentary votes.

Only 97.7 percent of the ballot boxes had been opened when YSK head Sadi Guven addressed reporters on Sunday.

Guven said the remaining uncounted votes will not affect election results.

“Our democracy has won, the people’s will has won, Turkey has won,” Erdogan told a crowd of enthusiastic supporters in the capital, Ankara, thanking the Turkish citizens who cast their ballots in an election that saw a record turnout of 87 percent.

The 64-year-old also declared victory for the People’s Alliance, a bloc between his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), saying they had won a parliamentary majority in the legislative elections, also held on Sunday.

“Winners of June 24 elections are Turkey, Turkish nation, sufferers of our region and all oppressed in the world,” he said.

He also thanked Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader, members and voters.

“I would like to express my gratitude to my people, my brothers and sisters who put their trust in me, my alliance and my party,” he said.

Erdogan’s closest rival, Muharrem Ince, of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), received 30.8 per cent of the votes, according to Anadolu.

He was followed by Selahattin Demirtas, of the pro-Kurdish Democratic People’s Party (HDP), at 8.1 per cent and debutante right-wing IYI (Good) Party’s Meral Aksener, at 7.4 per cent.

The voting marked the first time Turkish voters cast their ballots in simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, in line with the constitutional changes approved in a referendum last year that will transform the country’s parliamentary system to an executive presidential one.

Earlier on Sunday, Erdogan declared his success in Turkey’s historic presidential and parliamentary elections.

AK Party is also leading in parliamentary elections. Along with the MHP, the AK Party’s election ally, the People’s Alliance has won majority of the votes so far.

The president said he received the citizens’ message in the polls. “In this term, we will be before our nation and make up for our shortcomings.

“Starting from tomorrow, we will be in a rush trying to deliver on promises that we have made to our nation.”

He also said his government would confront terror groups more decisively. “We will increase our country’s international reputation,” he added.

“Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, we will start implementing our program by identifying our bureaucrats,” Erdogan said, vowing to work day and night as “we have no single moment to lose.”
