NEW DELHI — Family members of Taufiq Khan, who succumbed to injuries sustained in police firing in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, have rejected the claim that police forces killed him in self-defence.

According to Pratapgarh Superintendent of Police Satpal Antil, on Saturday a team of police went to nab criminals after they got a tip off about their activities. The alleged criminals opened fire at the police team in which two policemen got injured. The police opened fire at them in self-defence in which one Taufiq sustained injuries. He eventually died in hospital the following day.

Talking to local media, Taufiq’s wife Aliya Khan said there was no ‘encounter’ between him and the police. Nor did he open fire at the police team. On the contrary, the police force entered his house through the window and fired at him when he was sleeping on the roof of his house. After being shot, he jumped off the roof and tried to run away. But he fell into a deep well located in the backyard of the house. Aliya alleged that he was beaten by a long bamboo in the well.

“Around 12 am, a team of police from Lal Ganj chased my husband and shot at him. He fell in a well. They abandoned him in the well after shooting. Half an hour later, they shot at themselves and went away,” said Aliya.

She further said that her uncle Maqbool was also killed in similar fashion by the police a year ago.

Locals said that Taufiq would be alive if the police had brought him out of the well and taken him to hospital. But they left him in the well, presuming him dead. His death has angered his family members and the villagers.

According to Hindi daily Dainik Jagran, the police kept secret the information related to Taufiq for 12 hours. The police did not mention him even in the FIR registered in the case.

It was the family members of Taufiq who took him to Prayagraj hospital. He was referred to Lucknow hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Taufiq had come home from Gujarat five days ago after he was granted bail in the case of stealing from an ATM. He was named in several cases filed at different police stations under IT Act, POCSO Act, Arms Act, etc. in Uttar Pradesh.

The police said that it also arrested his aide Khurshid and recovered pistols and ammunition from him. Constables Satyam (28) and Ram Singh (30), who sustained injuries in the encounter, were admitted to a medical college in Pratapgarh.

According to reports, the body of Taufiq reached his village on Wednesday. But his family refused to bury the body.

Pratapgarh unit of All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has taken up the case to pressurize the administration to file an FIR in the matter. AIMIM leaders also met the additional Superintendent of Police in this regard. The party demanded to book the erring policemen for murder and sought compensation for the victims’ family.
