His journey from modest beginnings to being a revered doctor and a voice for the underprivileged has been marked by resilience and dedication. In an exclusive interview with Clarion India, Dr. Aijaz Ali shares insights into his life’s trajectory, highlighting the challenges he faced and the milestones he achieved.

Born on April 9, 1958, in the household of Sheikh Mumtaz Ali, Dr. Aijaz’s early years were shaped by modesty and perseverance. Despite facing economic hardships, his father, a trailblazer in the family, pursued education and rose to the esteemed position of BDO under British rule. Dr. Aijaz’s educational journey commenced in a madrasa, followed by schooling at Anjuman Islamia School in Munger. His academic prowess shone through as he consistently topped his classes, culminating in his exceptional performance in the matriculation examination.

Reflecting on his formative years, Dr. Aijaz Ali recalled that his entire education was in government schools due to financial constraints. “Despite the challenges, my passion for learning never wavered,” he said. His affinity for mathematics, physics, and chemistry initially steered him towards a career in science. However, familial aspirations nudged him towards biology, laying the foundation for his illustrious medical career.

This transition proved to be a turning point for Dr. Aijaz Ali. Despite initial difficulties, his unwavering determination propelled him to excel. “I saw my future in medicine and embarked on a relentless pursuit of my dream,” he affirmed. Acing the entrance test at Patna Science College and securing a coveted spot at Patna Medical College underscored his tenacity and academic prowess.

Entering Patna Medical College in 1975 marked a significant milestone, fulfilling his family’s dreams and positioning him as the first doctor in his lineage. However, financial constraints persisted, necessitating resourcefulness and resilience. “The journey through medical college was arduous, with financial struggles casting a shadow. Yet, my resolve remained steadfast,” Dr. Aijaz Ali reminisced.

Completing his MS from Patna Medical College, Dr. Aijaz Ali embarked on his professional journey with a commitment to serve. Establishing his practice in 1984, he prioritised accessibility by charging a nominal fee of ten rupees for consultations. “My goal was never monetary gain; it was always about serving the community,” he asserted.

Over the years, Dr. Aijaz Ali’s clinic became a sanctuary for the marginalised, offering hope and healing to those in need. His steadfast dedication earned him the moniker of ‘doctor of the poor,’ as he tirelessly attended to patients irrespective of their financial status. “Serving the underprivileged became my life’s mission,” he stated.

Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Aijaz Ali’s advocacy extended to addressing systemic inequalities plaguing the marginalised, particularly the Muslim community. Founding the Backward Muslim Morcha, later rebranded as All India United Muslim Morcha, he championed the cause of reservations for the disadvantaged sections of society. “Empowering the marginalised is crucial for societal progress,” he emphasised, advocating for inclusive policies to uplift the underprivileged.

Dr. Aijaz Ali’s journey exemplifies the power of determination, service, and advocacy in effecting positive change. “Success without purpose is hollow,” he said, underscoring the importance of setting meaningful goals and working tirelessly towards their attainment.

As he continues his crusade for justice and equality, Dr. Aijaz Ali remains a source of inspiration, embodying the values of compassion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to social welfare.
