NEW DELHI – Despite curfew in the city, Udaipur police have allowed Hindutva groups to take out a march and shout slogans against Muslims over the killing of a tailor.
According to NDTV, thousands of people participated in the march held in the Town Hall area of Udaipur on Thursday to demand the death penalty for the two accused involved in the murder of Kanhaiya Lal for supporting Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) suspended spokesperson Nupur over their derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.
The march was taken out under the banner of Sangathit Hindu Samast Bharat. The protesters were also demanding a ban on madrasas and a watch on mosques. A protester said that the madarsas can be run only in Pakistan, not in India.
“Every mosque should be probed,” said a protester to NDTV reporter.
Another protester said that they are not satisfied with the arrest of the accused. They want the government to go into the roots of the crime.
“If madrasa is being run in Pakistan, there is no issue. In India, madrasa should not be run,” said yet another protester.
The police have allowed Hindutva groups to hold a march despite the fact Section 144 is in force in the city.
Meanwhile, there was chaos during the protest after a stone-pelting at the march. However, the police were able to bring the situation under control.
“It shouldn’t be blown out of proportion. The procession was peaceful, by and large, and the district administration had given permission to hold a peaceful march,” senior police official was quoted by NDTV as saying.
After the tailor’s killing, the city witnessed violent protests. A police officer was also attacked with a sword. Since then, a curfew has been in place. Hindutva outfits also took out a rally in Gurgaon on Wednesday in support of Kanhaiya and raised anti-Muslim slogans.
Slogans like “Jab Mulle Katey Jayenge, Ram Ram Chillayenge” “Peygambar tera baap ka naam, Jai Shri Ram, Jai Shri Ram” were raised during the Gurgaon protest.
The killing was condemned by all sections of the society. Muslim organisations and leaders have also issued statements in condemnation of the killing.
The police have arrested Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, who are seen on camera attacking Kanhaiya Lal with a cleaver and five more have been detained. The Union Home Ministry has appointed the National Investigative Agency (NIA) to probe the killing.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot met the family members of the deceased in Udaipur on Thursday.
