NEW DELHI — Even as Muslims have unequivocally condemned the murder of a Hindu tailor in Udaipur, the social media is abuzz with violent hate messages against the community with calls for social and economic boycott.

Hindutva supporters are running a hashtag #TotalBoycott with many squarely blaming entire Muslim community and Islam for the heinous act of the two men who carried out the gruesome murder.

Tweets are bordered on anti-Muslim rhetoric giving open calls for Hindus to “wakeup before it’s too late” .

Abhijit Majumder, a journalist with rightwing bent, said: “The time has come. Get out of your comfort zones. Find out ways you can defend this civilisation and help people who are seriously defending it. Don’t just sit back and outrage. Start doing your bit. Organise.”

A rally was also organised by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Gurugram demanding action against the Udaipur culprits. Incendiary Islamophobic slogans including ‘Jab Mulle Kate Jaenge Ram Ram Chillayenge”  rent the air along the rally route a video of which was shared on twitter by journalist, Meer Faisal.

A similar demonstration was held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The protesters who participated in the demonstration demanded that the accused should be sent to gallows.

Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur was hacked to death by two men on camera inside his shop on Tuesday afternoon. The grouse of the killers was that the victim had supported Nupur Sharma on social media, the former BJP spokesperson who courted controversy with her remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

The grisly murder triggered a wave of anger with people from Hindu community in Rajasthan pouring out on streets demanding action against the culprits. The police swung into action enforcing restrictions including a ban on mobile internet to restore law and order.

The incident evoked condemnation across the political divide including leaders from the Muslims community who called the act anti-Islamic. However, supporters of rightwing Hindu fringe are building a narrative against Muslims and Islam.

On the #Totalboycott hashtag Sidharath Vardrajan, the editor of the Wire tweeted asking the police that since they claim to be monitoring the social media they should open law books and find if section 153 of the IPC applies here. “Shouldn’t you act against them? Shouldn’t you investigate the conspirators behind the hashtag?” he asked.
