NEW DELHI – In a new development, Delhi Police, in keeping with their crockdown on activists, arrested two female activists of Pinjratod, Devangana and Natasha.

Pinjratod is an organisation fighting for women’s rights and freedom. Devangana and Natasha were part of the anti-CAA movement in Jafrabad.

According to an official statement of the organisation, “They (the activists) were arrested from their homes on the basis of a FIR registered by the Jafrabad police station after an interrogation by the Special Cell shortly before officials from PS Jafrabad were arrested.”

DCP (Northeast) Ved Prakash Surya confirmed the arrests.

Outraged by the arbitrary arrests that smacks of vendetta, activists started posting condemnation messages against the arrests on social media. Former IAS officer Kannan Gpinathan, tagging Delhi Police, tweeted, “If you are just going to arrest everyone who protested against CAA-NRC, then there are many like us who should be arrested first.”

Earlier, amid the ongoing Coronavirus lockdown, several activists were arrested on trumped up charges linking them to northeast Delhi pogrom in which more than 50 people killed. Almost all those arrested are students from different universities. Safoora Zargar, a Ph.D. scholar, Meeran Haider and Asif Iqbal Tanha were among those arrested.

The activists were particularly critical of the Delhi Police for the timing the action against student leaders coinciding with corona lockdown. They see their crackdown on innocent students as a design to curb voice of dissent, which is abominable in a democratic country.

While innocent are being hounded by the unscrupulous cops, leaders belonging to the ruling BJP like Kapil Mishra et al who openly gave call to violence got off scot free.

“We strongly condemn the witch-hunt of democratic activists and students being carried out by the state and appeal to the student community and all democratic minded citizens to remain vigilant and strong in our struggles in face of this repression,” the statement reads.
