AHMEDABAD — A Dalit youth in Anand district of Gujarat was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men belonging to Patel family for watching a garba event that was going on in a temple on September 29.
The victim identified as Jayesh Solanki, along with his cousin and two other Dalit men, was watching the garba not inside the temple but were sitting at a house adjacent to the temple. Upper caste men, the accused, did not tolerate the presence of Dalits in close proximity of the temple.
The accused made casteist remarks and asked some more people to come to the spot and they started thrashing Jayesh.
According to a police officer at the Bhadran Police Station, the accused said that Dalits do not have have any right to watch garba.
Jayesh, 21, was brutally thrashed by the mob of unruly upper caste men along with his friends and cousin. “Jayesh’s head was banged against a wall,” according to police sources.
When he was taken to hospital he was declared brought dead.
An FIR has been registered under IPC sections related to murder and the Prevention of Atrocities Act against eight men, Police informed.
Deputy SP (SC/ST cell) AM Patel, however, said it did not appear to be a pre-planned attack.
The police officer said, “Jayesh was killed in the heat of the moment, as there was no rivalry between him and the accused. We are probing the case from all angles. The accused will be arrested soon.”
