CHENNAI – An 11-year-old Dalit boy, M Sadhusundar, from V. Agaram Government School in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district, suffered nerve damage after his teacher, Sengenni, allegedly beat him severely with a bamboo stick.

The boy complained of blurry vision following the arch 14 incident and he was rushed to Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry, where he underwent surgery for nerve damage.

R Velmurugan, district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) for South Chennai, shared images of the boy recovering after surgery on social media. Velmurugan claimed that the teacher hit Sadhusundar on the head, causing a fractured skull and nerve damage. He also accused authorities of not taking any action against the teacher.

However, Villupuram Superintendent of Police (SP) P. Saravanan stated that an FIR was filed on the same day as the incident, and the teacher was suspended by the school department the next day.

According to SP Saravanan, the boy was struck on his hands by the teacher, which led to him becoming unwell and being taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed nerve damage in his head. The police consulted JIPMER doctors to understand the cause of the nerve damage, as there were no visible external injuries, he was quoted as saying by The News Minute.

Since the teacher belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC) community, the police have not charged him under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. However, the FIR will be updated based on the findings of the medical investigation, the SP said.
