MUMBAI – Tension gripped Dhad village in Maharashtra’s Buldana district after a dispute over the bursting of crackers during a procession celebrating Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary escalated into a communal clash late Saturday night. The incident resulted in stone-pelting, arson, and injuries to two policemen and several civilians.
The disturbance reportedly began at Shivaji Chowk when the procession, which had initially proceeded peacefully, encountered resistance over fireworks. The situation spiralled into violence, with stones hurled from both sides and vehicles set ablaze.
“We received information about stone-pelting and arson around midnight,” said Superintendent of Police Vishwa Pansare. “Our team responded swiftly to control the situation. A curfew has been imposed, and additional forces, including the Rapid Action Force, have been deployed to maintain order.”
By Sunday afternoon, 17 people were arrested, and an FIR was registered against 33 individuals from both communities. “Investigations are ongoing, and we are committed to bringing all perpetrators to justice,” added SP Pansare.
The village, a bustling market hub usually teeming with activity, now resembles a ghost town. “Most shops are closed, and streets are deserted,” observed a local resident. “The tension is palpable.”
While police patrol sensitive areas, residents remain wary. Authorities have urged the public to maintain peace and refrain from spreading rumours. “We appeal to the citizens of Dhad to cooperate with law enforcement and uphold communal harmony,” a police spokesperson stated.
Efforts are underway to restore normalcy, but the scars of the unrest linger.
