NEW DLEHI — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned the spate of attacks on members of the Muslims community in different parts of the country describing them as “sharpening communal assaults following the setback suffered by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections”.

In a letter to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora on Friday, the Delhi chapter of the CPI(M) demanded action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader for threat to kill two lakh Muslims within 48 hours in the Sangam Vihar area of the national capital.

“The local SHO of the Delhi Police has neither found out the culprits behind this anti-social act nor registered an FIR against the person who committed the hate speech. This gross negligence on the part of the Delhi Police which has ramifications on maintaining communal amity cannot be condoned,” reads the letter written by CPI(M) state secretary KM Tiwari.

The letter is in response to the viral video of a BJP leader, identified as Karnail Singh. In the video, he can be seen threatening mass violence against the minority community before a police officer.

“The political leadership of all hues including the BJP has dissociated from these acts and the CPI(M) Delhi State Committee demands immediate action against those who are out to disturb the communal amity and an FIR against the person who made the hate speech,” Tiwari said.

On Thursday, CPI(M) politburo issued a statement condemning the attacks on Muslim in other parts of the country.

“The Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the spate of attacks against members of the Muslim community in various parts of the country in the period since the election results were announced,” reads the statement.

The statement mentioned various incidents of attacks occurring in Chattishgarh’s Raipur, Himachal Pradesh’s Nahan and the house demolitions in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

In Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, three Muslim men transporting bullocks were branded as cow smugglers and killed by so-called cow vigilantes earlier this month, and in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, a Muslim man was beaten to death on allegations of theft, it stated.

It also talked about the demolition of 11 houses of Muslims in Mandala (Madhya Pradesh) on the frivolous claims that “beef” was recovered from their refrigerators.

The party further called upon all its units to remain vigilant against such unscrupulous manoeuvres by the BJP and other communal outfits. “Units throughout the country should organise protest actions immediately against attempts at vitiating the atmosphere and seeking to divert the attention of the people,” the CPI(M) statement said.

“Such sharpening of communal assaults following the setbacks suffered by the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections highlight the fact that the BJP and the Hindutva communal forces will intensify their attempts at polarisation with renewed vengeance,” noted the statement.
