NEW DELHI – Left parties have emerged as a formidable force in the recent assembly elections in Bihar, walking away with as many as 16 of the 29 seats they contested.

While the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation (CPI-ML) has turned out to be a major political force, being the biggest gainer among the three communist parties by winning 12 out of the 19 seats it contested, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM), which had fielded six and four candidates, respectively, won two seats each.

The CPI-ML leaders said that the remarkable performance by their party is the result of a long struggle they had been doing for people, especially the marginalised sections of society for years on end.

The Left party had won three seats in the last assembly elections. This time, it has won 12 by contesting the elections as part of the grand alliance. The CPI-ML leaders conceded that they had got the benefit of being part of the grand alliance (RJD-Congress-Left Parties) but the main force behind their success is their long struggle for the people.

Kunal, state secretary of CPI-ML, told Clarion India that this result did not come out of the blue but was the fruit of their long struggle. They have established their identity and image by working 24 hours for the people.

“We keep fighting for truth and democracy. This is the result of this struggle. This time, we have been part of the Mahagathbandhan which increased our force. This is not a sudden phenomenon. Our party is a very old party,” said Kunal.

He said that being a communist party, it definitely fought for the marginalised sections of society. But it was not enough. His party had struggled on the issue of farmers’ rights, unemployment, education, labour’s rights, and communalism, all democracy related issues.

Kunal said that the party had expected a grand alliance government this time. But, the alliance could not win the mandate to form the government. Yet, they will continue their fight for employment, education, farmers’ rights, healthcare and communal harmony.

Kavita Krishnan, politbureau member of the CPI-ML, echoed the views of her party colleague Kunal that this remarkable performance was the result of their long struggle for the people. She believes that her party gained from the grand alliance but at the same time, the alliance candidates also gained from left parties’ groundwork for a long time in certain constituencies.

Talking about the better performance of CPI-ML compared to that of CPI and CPM, Krishnan feels that CPI-ML is the most popular party in Bihar among the left parties for the last decade. It has been working and fighting elections independently for long. However, on the other hand, CPI and CPM have been contesting elections along with RJD and the Congress for years. Hence, their presence has been mingled with other secular parties. But it is not the case with CPI-ML.

“We have maintained our independent identity for long even during tough times. There was a time when efforts were made to eliminate us in Bihar. CPI-ML had to pay a very big price for sake of its independent identity. This is the reason CPI-ML has succeeded in carving out its independent face among the left parties. This is continued now at a time when the arrogance of the BJP is skyrocketing,” said Krishnan.

She said that her party was quite popular among the poor sections of society in Bihar. It is a separate matter that it has no charismatic leader who is very popular and good speaker. But the CPI-ML’s identity is very big than any leader. Its founding leader Ram Naresh Ram, who died in 2010, was one of the most famous leaders in Bihar.
