NEW DELHI – Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member of parliament from Jaipur in Rajasthan, Ramcharan Bohra, has created a controversy by claiming that Sanskrit mantras will soon resonate in the 12th-century ‘Dhai Din Ka Jhopra’ Mosque in Ajmer.
Bohra’s remarks came during the 78th Foundation Day celebration at Rajasthan University recently. Bohra claimed that the mosque was originally a Sanskrit University. This assertion has reignited discussions surrounding the mosque’s historical origins, bringing political tensions to the forefront.
Bohra presented a historical narrative, asserting that the two-and-a-half-day hut, known for its rapid construction, was initially built by Maharaja Vigraha Raj Chauhan as a Sanskrit school. However, in 1194, according to Bohra, Mohammad Gauri converted the school into a mosque, now famously known as ‘Dhai Din Ka Jhopra.’ The BJP MP went further to state that remnants of the Sanskrit University, including marble inscriptions, can still be found in the mosque.
The controversial statement, made in the presence of Governor Kalraj Mishra, emphasised Bohra’s belief that the mosque represents a mentality of slavery, and the time has come for a reclamation of cultural identity. He predicted that Sanskrit mantras would once again be heard within the mosque’s walls, sparking a surge in political discourse with implications for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Bohra’s assertion that the mosque was built by demolishing the Sanskrit University has led to increased scrutiny and speculation. The controversy has triggered discussions about the BJP’s intentions, with some questioning whether there are plans to demolish the mosque or initiate the recitation of Sanskrit mantras within its premises.
As the political temperature rises in Rajasthan, the Congress party, represented by former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, vehemently criticised Bohra’s statement. Khachariyawas challenged the BJP MP’s assertions, questioning the party’s agenda and. He accused the BJP of selectively targeting historical monuments and questioned the government’s priorities.
The BJP MP’s remarks have added a new layer to the ongoing discussions surrounding the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, as Bohra’s statement raises questions about the coexistence of historical structures and religious sentiments. The controversy has escalated, with the Congress leader challenging the BJP to prove its commitment to heritage preservation rather than selective demolition.
The repercussions of this controversy remain uncertain, leaving the public to speculate on the potential implications for the historical ‘Dhai Din Ka Jhopra’ mosque and its role in the cultural and religious landscape of Ajmer. The debate initiated by Bohra’s statement may well shape the narrative leading up to the Lok Sabha elections, influencing public opinion on matters of heritage, religion, and political agendas.
