NEW DELHI — In a shocking statement, a retired army officer has made a provocative remark about the Indian constitution saying it was divisive, works as termites and promotes minorityism.
Major Saras Tripathi, who also identifies himself as an author, columnist, and political commentator, made the controversial remarks at Vaishvik Hindu Rashtra Mahatsova (Worldwide Hindu Nation Festival) organised by the Hindu Jangiriti Samiti in Goa’s Panaji.
Major Tripathi’s comments came to light as Hindutva Watch, a research initiative to monitor reports of attacks on members of religious minorities in India, put out a video of his speech at the event.
“At Hindu Janjagruti Samiti’s event, Major Saras Tripathi, a former Indian Army officer, indulges in fear-mongering against Muslims,” tweeted Hindtuva Watch.
Addressing the event, which was convened for uniting Hindus and the establishment of a Hindu rashtra (nation), Tripathi also called for changes in the constitution.
“The constitution works like termites for our society. This constitution is divisive as it divides us. It also promotes minorityism. If I’m asked as to whether a change should be made in the constitution or the constitution should be replaced, my reply would be that the constitution should be replaced,” said Tripathi.
He further explained that he was advocating a replacement of the constitution as it was “difficult to convert a truck into a car. “If you want to have a new car, you will have to construct a new one,” he argued.
The retired major vowed that if he gets the time right, he would change the entire constitution. “The constitution is against the spirit of this country,” he claimed.
Tripathi is close to the present government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His book “Terrorism in Kashmir” was released by Union Minister Jitendra Singh and BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi at the Constitution Club in New Delhi in January 2018.
